A roof tent must withstand frequent folding and unfolding, strong wind, rain, and in extreme cases even hail. Such forces acting on the material must be properly managed in order for the product to serve for many years. Often, in the descriptions of our tents, we provide different water resistance properties of the tropics and the tent itself. This is due to the fact that using these tents ourselves and consulting ideas with specialists, we decided that elements exposed directly to moisture should have higher water resistance, and those that resist the forces acting on the tent should be more durable.
The specification of our tents is marked with the density of the fiber (D) and the water resistance measured in millimeters. The second parameter is the water pressure at which the fabric gets wet. The 2000 mm symbol means that the tent will start to leak when the water column is above 200 cm. For comparison, an ordinary umbrella has a water resistance of approx. 400 mm.
Fabrics are often subjected to additional processes to increase wind- and water-resistance, while maintaining their basic breathability. In very high humidity, it may happen that the water starts to condense inside the tent. However, the use of an anti-condensation mat and ventilation of the tent completely eliminate this phenomenon.
The second frequently discussed topic is the density of the fibers, marked with the letter "D". The greater the value in front of this sign, the thicker the fiber, where 1D is the size of the natural silk thread. D affects the weight and density of the material as well as its strength. In dmtents, we used mainly polyester fabric due to the lower stretchability, which has a direct impact on water and UV resistance and makes it easier to fold the tent.
Careful selection of materials in tents is the necessity. A stiff floor, walls that are difficult to tear, and a waterproof and windproof flysheet make traveling with a roof tent even more convenient and comfortable.
